We are a dynamic firm with expertise and experience in various types of building design including houses, industrial buildings, wine cellars, schools, offices, restaurants, galleries etc. Our designs strive for energy efficiency as far as possible. We offer our clients turn-key options , where we handle the entire project on behalf of the client, from the design stages, through approvals, tenders, appointment of builders and involvement in the construction process until completion.

Marcus Smit Architects is a professional architectural firm employing registered architects, architectural technologists and administrative personnel. The firm was established in 1996 by Marcus Smit. The firm is registered with with the South African Council for the Architectural Profession, The South African Institute for Architects and The Cape Institute for Architecture. The firm’s work has been acknowledged with Awards for Excellence and various publications.

The practice is involved in projects across the building spectrum including new buildings, refurbishments, alterations, interiors and landscape design.

Some ideas incorporated in our work have grown with us over time and have become familiar, while others emerge as new from a creative response to an ongoing dialogue between informing factors – the landscape or urban context, the site and its location, climate, orientation, views, environmental sensitivities as well as the universal social and architectural debate. A combination of the above, a strong focus on client requirements and aspirations, as well as a general attempt to relate functional requirements to form, can be seen as the basis of our design approach. A personal service from inception to finished product and a careful attention to detail is part of our work ethic.

The practice is located in Somerset Wes, 30 minutes drive outside Cape Town, and central to the Helderberg Basin, Cape Winelands, Overberg and Hermanus.

    With us every step of the way
    Marcu has a keen feel for the area and surrounds that he is working in. He honestly considers the client's wishes and takes care to incorporate those into his plans. From our first meeting, to finalised plans to overseeing the building project with a meticulous eye for detail, Marcus was with us every step of the way in building our family home. I would recommend him time and again.

    Thinking out of the box
    Marcus kept tight control of me and steered us with the build and refurb of an old building to create the Elgin Railway Market. Without him it would not be the magnificent icon it is today.

    Designer Aesthetic with World-Class Project Management
    We couldn't be happier. Marcus's designs are modern, timeless and functional. He took time to understand our needs and was very open to ideas and suggestions when it came to the design. He and his team, especially Ansu, were also highly efficient and organised. Our project was concluded within budget and on time, and we are incredibly happy with the design.
