Raft foundation is a thick concrete slab with reinforced steel which covers the entire contact area of the structure like a thick floor. Sometimes the area that is covered by the raft may greater than the contact area depending on the bearing capacity of the soil underneath. The reinforcing bars runs normal to each other in both top and bottom layers of steel reinforcements. Sometimes inverted main beams and secondary beams are used to carry columns loads that require thicker slab considering economy of the structure. Both beams run monolithically with raft slab.

Slabs are used to furnish a flat and useful surface in reinforced concrete construction. It is a broad flat plate, usually horizontal, with top and bottom surfaces parallel or nearly so. It may be supported by reinforced concrete beams, by masonry or reinforced concrete walls, by structural steel members, by direct columns or continuously by ground. Slabs in which the defected surface is predominantly cylindrical, is called one way slabs spanning in the direction of curvature.
This condition arises when slabs are supported on two opposite sides, and those supported on all four sides with the longer span greater than twice the shorter span.
